who, like happy sprites,
ran about the farm with
their fine tallow lights.

Meat Hook, the twelfth one,
his talent would display
as soon as he arrived
on Saint Thorlak's Day.

He snagged himself a morsel
of meat of any sort,
although his hook at times was
a tiny bit short.

Eleventh was Door Sniffer,
a doltish lad and gross.
He never got a cold, yet had
a huge, sensitive nose.

He caught the scent of lace bread
while leagues away still
and ran toward it weightless
as wind over dale and hill.

like spindle he was thin.

He felt himself in clover

when the cook wasn't in.

Then stepping up, he grappled

the stirring spoon with glee,

holding it with both hands

for it was slippery.

Yuletide Lad No.2: Giljagaur (Gully Gawk)

Before the days of milking machines, Giljagaur (Gully Gawk) would sneak into the cowshed and skim the froth off the pails of milk...

The second was Gully Gawk,

gray his head and mien.

He snuck into the cow barn

from his graggy ravine.

the milkmaid gave the cowherd

a meaningful smile.

He came stiff as wood,

Christmas Time with the Yuletide Lads

The belief in about the Yule Lads goes back to the olden days in Iceland. They are trolls who originally were known for making mischief and stealing things around Christmas time. This mischievous nature is reflected in their names, and starting on 12 December, the first of the lads or jólasveinar as they are known in Icelandic, will be coming to town.
Each day until Christmas day, for your entertainment we will be featuring one of these meddlesome folk.

The lads and their parents, Grýla and Leppalúði, were useful for scaring children into behaving themselves. "If you're not good, then Grýla will come and eat you!" The family pet, the Yuletide cat, was said to come and take all those who didn't get new clothes at Christmas. New clothes and shoes were a reward for having been obedient and hard-working throughout the year, and the lazy didn't get any, and so the cat took them.

Around the beginning of the 20th century, the modern Santa Claus appeared on the scene, and Icelanders became aware of the Scandinavian Julenisser, gnome-like creatures who were kind to children. The Yule lads began to develop into a mixture of Julenisser, Yule lads and Santa Claus. The modern Yule lads are funny old men with child-like minds and behaviour. They have retained some of their mischievous nature, although these days they have learned that they will usually get what they want if they only ask for it.

The change from mischievous trolls to kind gift-givers works quite well. All a child has to do is to put a shoe on the windowsill, and in the morning there would be a gift inside the shoe. If the child had been bad, there might be a raw potato instead. The origin of this tradition probably lies in the foreign custom of hanging up stockings on Christmas Eve, to be filled by Santa during the night.

But this wasn't all. The Yule Lads had always dressed in rags before, but to reflect their new image, they adopted the dress of Santa Claus: red trousers, red tunic, black boots and the classic red hat with white fur trimming. If you ever visit Iceland in December, chances are you will see these lads scampering about, entertaining children in shopping centres and generally having fun.

In the old days, the Lads would arrive one a day, for 13 days before Yule, and then leave one a day for 13 days after Yule. This is why Icelandic children get shoe gifts for 13 days before Christmas. Lucky them!

Öskudagur: Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday is celebrated in Iceland with a unique custom that is very entertaining for children. Ashes are collected into small bags known as Öskupokar or Ash Bags. As a prank, these bags are secretly pinned on to people's clothing. The day is also marked with children singing and parading around the streets and shops, begging for treats.

Sprengidagur: Bursting Day

On Shrove Tuesday (the day before Lent) every Icelandic home and most restaurants flood with the aroma of salted meat (usually lamb) and peas. The name Sprengidagur refers to the idea that the individual feasts on this hearty dish to the point of bursting.  

Bolludagur: Bun Day

Bolludagur is a Lenten festival and takes place on the Monday, just before what we'd call Shrove Tuesday and Icelanders traditionally stuff themselves with cream-filled buns.

The custom dates from the late nineteenth century and was probably introduced by Danish or Norwegian bakers, although some edible treats would have been eaten on this day much earlier.

Much of the bun eating now takes place on Sunday, however, since Monday is a workday and there's less time for baking, well at least for those inclined to do a spot of home baking. Although, these days it is very easy to buy ready-made ones from the shops.

This day also used to be called flengingardagur (Spanking Day). In earlier and exceptionally devout times, Catholic people would flagellate themselves, to be reminded of the pain endured by Jesus. Later, this practice evolved into a comical parody of sorts and people began spanking each other!

The aim of the 'game' is try and catch someone still in bed and give them a good beating, using a special wand. Children give their parents a merciless wake-up call using their brightly decorated sticks, and for every whack of the wand and shouts of Bolla! bolla! bolla, they expect to be rewarded with a bun.

Bun Day is big business for Icelandic bakeries. It is estimated that they sell around one million buns on or around the day, which means almost four buns for every Icelander!

If you fancy sharing in some Icelandic bun delights, we have found a very traditional recipe from the book Icelandic Food and Cookery, by Nana Rögnvaldardóttir.

Bolludagsbollur

Makes approx 16 buns

Ingredients

1/2 cup butter, softened

2/3 cup sugar

3 eggs

1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom or grated zest of 1 lemon

2 1/2 cups flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

2 cups whipped cream

8 oz chocolate, melted

Method

Preheat the oven to 375F. Cream butter and sugar and whisk in the eggs, one at a time.

Add the cardamom or lemon zest. Sift the flour with the baking powder and stir until thoroughly blended but do not over mix.

Scoop up the dough with a tablespoon and make small mounds on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper – there should be around 16 buns in all.

Bake in the centre of the oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the buns begin to brown at the edge. They will spread out somewhat but should be around 1 inch thick in the middle.

Let them cool on a rack, then split each bun in half and pipe a generous dollop of cream on the bottom half. Dip the upper half in melted chocolate and sandwich the bun together.

New Album from Apparat Organ Quartet

We're really excited that Apparat Organ Quartet have released a new album. Entitled Pólyfónia, Jóhann Jóhannsson leads his band of four organists and one drummer to create a pounding and atmospheric soundscape.
Having seen them live at Iceland Airwaves a few years ago, we were awestruck by what we heard. Although an electronic band, no sequencers are used and the entire set is played live note for note - utterly amazing!

In Search of the Northern Lights

As we gaze, entranced, by the sky’s spectacle, the local teenagers across the street, seem unaware as they munch on burgers from Aktu Taktu.

I felt as if I’ve waited all my life to see the marvels of the aurora borealis. As a child I often studied the pictures in my science encyclopaedia and wondered what it would be like to see them for real. Then, it was just an unattainable dream to me, as I never imagined going to the places where they occur.

Iceland is perfectly situated at the top of the world as it sits directly below the auroral belt.

Certain conditions are required to see the northern lights. Firstly it has to be dark, so during the months from September to April it is best time for viewing.
The sky has to be reasonably clear – clouds have a nasty habit of obscuring the light show. Also fog or mist is not helpful either.
Lastly, for some reason, temperature has an effect, so the colder the better.

If you’re lucky enough to get all three ideal conditions then you’re in for a treat.
I was determined to see something even if we didn’t venture out on a trip into the countryside to see them.
There are several companies that offer a guided bus tour, at a price of course, but if you’re fortunate enough you can see them flash across the sky over Reykjavik, free of charge – nature is generous like that!
Look north, and up, and look hard. Depending on the current intensity and activity of the aurora you may see a wide green band or even curtain-like shapes tinged with red and violet.

We found that the best place to watch the lights is anywhere along the harbour/sea front. This way you get an uninterrupted view of the sky. Take a stroll to the Viking ship sculpture (pictured at the top of this website) and face towards the sea.
As with all natural phenomenon the aurora can be a little unpredictable, so patience is key.

I will always remember witnessing that first sighting, outside Domino’s, of all places. Not very romantic, I know.
There’s something almost magical and hypnotising about the aurora, I could have watched the faint ethereal glow for hours if the cold hadn’t started to make my face uncomfortably numb. Anyway our pizza was ready and we were hungry!

I have most definitely fallen under the spell of the Northern lights, for whenever we return to Reykjavik, and the conditions are right, I cannot stop looking upwards, just to get a glimpse of their luminescent dance.

Reykjavik Arts Festival 2010

Volcano!: Iceland Erupts

Iceland is often referred to as the Land of Ice and Fire and in March and April 2010 it proved that it is indeed very fiery, when a series of volcanic eruptions shook the country and the after effects eventually affected most of Europe.
Despite Iceland's nickname, people are surprised to learn that the country is covered in volcanoes, in fact, Iceland is relatively young in geological terms, and is still settling down. Straddling the tectonic plates of North America and Eurasia, earthquakes are common and the earth's searing hot magma is never far from the surface. It's no surprise then, that there are gushing geysers, hot springs and bubbling mud pools.
With this geothermal activity on tap, the Icelanders have harnessed our planet's power to heat their homes. But not everything in nature can be controlled and tamed and a volcano blowing its top serves as reminder as to how fragile the human race is.

On March 20th, 2010 an eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano began in Fimmvörðuháls following months of small earthquakes under the Eyjafjallajökull glacier. The eruption opened a 0.5 km long fissure on the northern part of the pass. Just over a week later, the Fimmvörðuháls eruption produced a 300-meter-long fissure and new craters were seen erupting on a north trending path toward the area of Þórsmörk, a popular tourist nature reserve, prompting tours to briefly stop as volcanologists assessed the situation further.

This was followed in April by a larger eruption on Eyjafjallajökull itself.
On 14 April 2010 Eyjafjallajökull resumed erupting after a brief pause, this time from the top crater in the centre of the glacier, causing meltwater floods (known in Iceland as Jokulhlaup) to rush down the nearby rivers, and requiring 800 people to be evacuated. This eruption was explosive in nature and is estimated to be ten to twenty times larger than the previous one on Fimmvörðuháls. This second eruption threw volcanic ash several kilometres up in the atmosphere which led to travel disruptions in northwest Europe on 15 April 2010 including the closure of airspace over most of Northern Europe.

As we at Reykjavik Outsider are based in the UK, we haven't been able to experience the eruptions first hand. Although dangerous, it would be amazing to get up close to a volcano spewing out its red hot lava.
Fortunately, others have been lucky enough to capture these images for themselves, and we have put together a slide show (top) from the pictures available on Flickr and found a cool video from You Tube (above).
Its almost incredible to remember that only a few years ago we were in Þórsmörk and had stood at the foot of the very glacier that is host to that volcano.

Iceland Express re-introduces flights from London Stansted

Low-cost carrier Iceland Express is offering more flights between Britain and Reykjavik by restarting flights from London Stansted and adding Birmingham to its departure airports.
The airline, which already flies from London Gatwick, will start the Stansted service in November; flights from Birmingham commence next summer.

Today is Iceland's national day. It is celebrated every year on June 17 to mark the day when Iceland was formally established a republic in 1944, finally declaring independence from Danish rule.

This special day is celebrated all over the country with colourful marching parades and prominent people giving speeches from town and city squares.

Traditionally, a woman dressed as the Fjallkonan (The Mountain Woman), wearing Iceland’s most festive national dress, reads a poem. The Fjallkonan represents the Icelandic spirit and nature and became a symbolic figure in Iceland’s fight for independence.

Iceland is known for it's fishing industry and in fact it was founded by a great sea-faring race, the Vikings, so what better way to celebrate all things good to do with the ocean than a special day dedicated to the sea, it's history, economy and it's people.

This Friday, on 15 May the Reykjavík Arts Festival will begin: a two-week programme of exciting events will take place on the city's streets, in theatres, concert halls, opera houses, art museums and galleries, lighthouses, private homes and selected places in the countryside.

The Reykjavík Arts Festival 2009, which continues until 31 May, will cover art in a wide range of genres. More than 70 events will feature the work of around 500 local and international artists. The varied programme will touch on almost every aspect of the arts, but music will take pride of place this year with a number of ambitious music events.

Midnight Run

Why not to pay a visit to Iceland this year to experience a series of running events starting with the Midnight Run on 23 June.

Taking place under the midnight sun, the race offers 3km, 5km and 10km routes to suit people of all running abilities and invites participants to relax in the Laugardalslaug thermal pools after their exertions.

A more draining proposition is the Laugavegur Ultra Marathon, which will take place along a well-known hiking route on 18 July.

The race takes in two of Iceland's many scenic areas - Landmannalaugar and Þórsmörk – meaning it is an impressive and enjoyable event for spectators.

Holidaymakers will be able to see Iceland's running season come to a close on 22 August with the Reykjavik Marathon, which coincides with Culture Night, an evening event featuring live music, street entertainment and fireworks.

While some establishments need to close during the Easter holidays, in particular on Easter Sunday, plenty stay open during the entire Easter weekend. These include many restaurants and museums, the famous Blue Lagoon, Reykjavík Family Park & Zoo, Hallgrimskirkja Church, Laugardalslaug and Arbaejarlaug thermal pools, and much more. The Reykjavík Blues Festival hosts international guests directly from the heartlands of the blues, Mississippi and Chicago and has always laid emphasis on giving young and upcoming artists an opportunity to perform. Airline, Iceland Express relocates operations to Gatwick in May: Is this a smart move?

We feel it necessary to deviate from our relatively impartial approach and deliver our response to Iceland Express's decision to switch London airports.

Starting from the beginning of May, Stansted will no longer be base for the airline who have made the choice to operate from Gatwick.

In short, this has made it inconvienient, more time consuming and more costly for the majority of passengers and that includes us. To quote from the Iceland Express website:

"Basically, what it means is that our passengers will be a little bit closer to central London. The Gatwick Express takes around 30 minutes to Victoria Station, about 15 minutes less than the Stansted Express takes to Liverpool Street. And if anyone is using London as a stepping stone on the way to or from Iceland there are lots and lots of good connections at Gatwick."

London is not the centre of the universe. Stansted has a very good express rail link to London. The airport also serves many other European countries and is a convenient hub for flight connections.

We don't think the change has been made to the advantage of passengers, but merely to suit the needs of the airline.

It is such a pity, as we've always been very impressed with Iceland Express, it's one of the few low-cost airlines where you're made to feel welcome and are not treated like cattle. Neither are you expected to pay extra for necessary in-flight services.

Just take a look at the comments left on Iceland Express's blog and you can see that it has upset a fair few people, many of whom share our sentiments.

Food and Fun Festival 2009

A smorgasbord of delights awaits you at Food and Fun 2009. Between the 18th and the 22nd of March a star studded roundup of chefs from around the globe will prepare mouthwatering delicacies from fresh, local ingredients at some of the best restaurants in Reykjavik. So whether you want to savour succulent lamb that once grazed the unspoilt hills of Iceland, startingly fresh fish, or simply devour the atmosphere – this is the place.

The name really says it all... Food and Fun is an event which combines outstanding culinary skills, fresh natural ingredients, outdoor adventures and the world-famous Reykjavik nightlife to create the ultimate recipe for fun.

The core element of the festival involves world acclaimed chefs who collaborate with Reykjavik's best restaurants. Each chef is assigned to one of the participating restaurants, where they prepare a special menu from Icelandic ingredients. The menu is presented at all the restaurants for an entire week. In addition, the chefs themselves are on site for three nights during the festival week.

The second element is the chef competition, which takes place on the last day of the the festival. The chefs compete by making three courses, made from only Icelandic ingredients. The competition is unique because the chefs all possess exceptional culinary skills, but have not worked with Icelandic ingredients before. Prior to the competition, they are given 30 minutes to quickly shop at the nearby supermarket with only one order: Icelandic ingredients only! Then they are given three hours to apply their magic.

Money, Money, Money

The currency of Iceland is the króna (plural krónur). The name meaning 'crown', is related to that of other Nordic currencies, such as the Swedish krona and Norwegian krone. Sometimes the name 'Icelandic crown' is used in the financial markets.

The current valid notes in circulation are: 500, 1000, 2000, 5000.

The coins are: 1, 5, 10, 50, 100.

When you decide to change your cherished pounds into króna, it is well worth shopping around to get the best rate. We're often surprised by how much the rate can vary between banks and bureaux de change. It may even be preferable to exchange currencies at the airport when you arrive in Iceland.

However, carrying vast amounts of Icelandic currency around with you is not really necessary as plastic cards are widely accepted throughout Iceland, except for American Express, but you should be okay with Visa or Mastercard.

Even Icelanders, themselves rarely pay in cash and we have often seen people paying for small purchases such as a cup off coffee, with a card. Paying in cash definitely highlights you as a tourist!

Beer Day: March 1st

Imagine years without beer. That means there is no beer at all in your country because it's illegal! Sounds daft, but for the Icelandic people that was true for 75 years. It wasn't legalised until 1989, and this year marks the 20th anniversary.

Since the legalisation, March 1st has always been celebrated to mark the end of the prohibition.

Brewing has steadily grown throughout Iceland and the most popular beer varieties such as Viking, Thule and Egils are available at all bars and restaurants.

What's the Weather Like?

Iceland has all sorts of weather and it is said that one can experience all four seasons in a single day! With that in mind it’s safe to say, be prepared for anything.

Despite the chilly sounding name, Iceland is not cold all of the time. Although it’s situated just below the arctic circle, the country benefits from the warming effects of the Gulf Stream, the same ocean current which keeps Britain out of the grips of a Siberian-like climate.

Summers are generally cooler than those in Britain, although we have experienced some scorching sunny days reaching 25C during July, so it is possible to go about wearing just a t-shirt.
It’s not uncommon for Icelanders to take full advantage of a good hot summer – offices even close early to allow their workers to soak up some rays and enjoy a barbecue.

If you’ve seen those beautiful photos of the country with its bright green moss-strewn lava fields, lush pastures grazed by semi-wild horses and all those thundering waterfalls, you have to realise that none of these could exist without water. And where does the water come from? Rain. Lots of it.
There’s no point glossing over the fact. If you’re going to stay in Reykjavik, you’re likely to get wet. The capital is conveniently positioned on the south-west peninsula and any moisture from the Atlantic tends to dump itself, just there.

If you’re tired of leaden grey skies then the wind will blow the clouds away. Iceland does do light breezes, but it’s also capable of raging storms and hurricane-force gusts.
We’ve had a dose of that too. A relentless arctic blast made it almost impossible to stand upright, let alone breathe!
Oh, and if it’s windy and rainy, then expect for it to be raining sideways!

Snowfall can be particularly heavy too, although like British winters, it’s for mostly short-lived periods. Reykjavik also has the added benefit of heating under some of its pavements, so that they clear relatively quickly.
For a more prolonged winter wonderland, then head north or into the countryside.

Well, hope that doesn’t paint a too disappointing picture of the weather for you, but Iceland cannot be missed just because of a spot of damp.
Far from being put off by the elements we like to enjoy them whatever they throw at us. The ever changing and sometimes inclement weather is what makes Iceland the way it is – and we relish every moment of it.

It's a Coffee and Cake Thing

Café culture has become one of our past times over the years and I think we owe it largely to our holidays spent in Reykjavik.

Coffee is definitely big in Iceland, strong too and it usually comes with endless free refills. In fact, the refill is a positive sign that you're welcome to stay as long as you like, unlike in some coffee franchises in the UK, which expect you to drink up and then leave. Shame on anyone who takes too long, or dares to carry on reading a book long after their cup is drained!

When we visit during the colder months a cozy café is a welcome respite from the often face-numbing arctic winds which race across the ocean.

On our recent trip we fell into Tíu Dropar on Reykjavik's main street, Laugavegur. It's a little homely place that sits just below street level, so the view out of the window gives one the amusing sight of feet going by – so it's more shoe than people watching!

I really like this place, it's more traditional than some of the other more swanky designer-style establishments in the city. It's popular with the locals too, which is always a good sign.

The small wooden tables are all snuggled into this warm and inviting room whose walls are hung with some interesting historical prints of local figures and old Reykjavik life. The crockery is rustic and slightly mismatched, adding to the charm. This place does not pretend to be anything that it's not – it's real through and through. I think you know what I mean when I say that, we've seen those places that try too hard to create a look and atmosphere, but it's so obviously 'themed'.

The café offers a range of fresh sandwiches, salads, soups, etc, but we couldn't resist their homemade chocolate cakes. Historically, Icelandic people have a very sweet tooth and the array of tasty baked goods available is testament to that fact.

Traditionally, Icelandic housewives would always offer their guests plenty of of strong coffee and quantities of cakes, pancakes and pastries – and that was before the dinner finally arrived on the table!

Kaffe og Kaka

The name of the café comes from an Icelandic expression "bara tíu dropar" which literally translates as "just ten drops" and means something like; "I'm-just-asking-for-a-little-but-really-I-want-another-full-cup". Well, it was cold and windy outside, so we felt the same too.

As Iceland is situated just below the arctic circle, you're never going to encounter any tropical diseases – so no worries about having to face a barrage of needles before you go.

Iceland is a clean country and the only thing that we can think of that you might need in the way of vaccinations, would be a tetanus booster. Especially so, if you intend on any hiking activities, where there could be the risk of injury and subsequent contact with any soil. But otherwise health issues are very much the same as they are for you when you're at home. So not very much to worry about really.

TIP: We would recommend, from personal experience, on packing a first aid kit. On a recent trip (no pun intended!) one of us had a rather close liaison with a granite bollard, resulting in a nasty shin graze. Trying to find suitable dressings on a Sunday morning is almost impossible.

Getting from the Airport to Your Hotel

It's relatively simple and trouble-free and the best option is to take the FlyBus which meets all incoming flights. Seats are guaranteed and you can either buy your ticket online or in the arrivals hall at the FlyBus kiosk.

We recommend that you buy a return ticket as this will save money and time for when you go home again. There's no specific time limit on the return part of the ticket, so no need to worry about it expiring.

There is also the Shuttle Service, this costs more. We have used this when leaving Reykjavík for a very early morning flight at stupid o'clock, as it offers earlier timings than the FlyBus. This is also bookable online.

Another option is a taxi, but this can be very pricey, so unless you're sharing and splitting the cost or are extremely flush, it's probably not the best option.

OUTSIDER INFO

We often get asked questions about the FlyBus and how it operates and we can appreciate how people maybe slightly confused about how it all works, so here's a step-by-step on what to expect:

1 If you haven't bought your ticket online already, go to the FlyBus kiosk and buy one there.

2 The bus waits outside the exit of the airport arrival hall. You can't miss it – it is a big coach with 'Reykjavik Excursions FlugRútan FlyBus' on the side.

3 The storage compartment doors are normally open and someone in uniform will put your luggage in and ask where you are staying.

4 Get on the bus and make yourself comfortable, later someone will come to check your ticket.

5 The bus takes to the road and finally stops at the BSÍ bus terminal.

6 Listen out for the driver who will tell you either to transfer to a mini bus or stay on the coach depending on where you are staying.

7 Your journey continues into the city to finally drop you off at your hotel door or other desired location.

Learn the Lingo?

You maybe wondering whether it's worth learning Icelandic.

The germanic type language is still original to that spoken by the first Viking settlers to Iceland, so it is an old and probably quite a special tongue. We can't think of any other country that uses it. Maybe Norwegian, Danish and Swedish have some resemblance to Icelandic, but there are only a few similarities.

Pretty much all Icelanders speak English, so you shouldn't be too disadvantaged, but it can be useful to know some words and phrases, and in particular being able to spot some words and understanding them can be helpful for signs and shopping.

The Icelandic alphabet uses a couple of odd looking letters that look like this:

Ð ð

This is called éth and sounds like the th in our word, the.

Þ þ

This is called thorn and sounds like the th in, well… our word thorn!

There are a variety of different accents too, which are used to alter the various vowel sounds:

á = ow as in cow

é = ye as in yes

í = ee as in we

ó = oh as in show

ú = oo as in you

ý = i as in lift

If you intend to buy any of the books on learning Icelandic, we recommend that you get one that has a CD with it. This is so important as you really need to hear how the words are pronounced. There are a lot of words that do not sound the way they are spelt, well at least not according to English phonetics, anyway.
